Every year, thousands of people die in motorcycle accidents. Without seatbelts, airbags, and sometimes even helmets, motorcyclists are more vulnerable to physical injuries. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in 2007 there were over 5,000 fatalities involving motorcycle accidents, accounting for 9.5 percent of crash fatalities nationwide.  More than 38 percent of those fatalities were due to head-on, or front, collisions. Accidents in which motorcyclists were hit from the right or left side accounted for 6.9 percent of motorcycle fatalities in 2007. Motorcycles with larger engines have become more popular in recent years; they have also been involved in more crash-related deaths. The number of motorcycles involved in fatal accidents rose 12.9 percent from 2005 to 2007.
